Making of Buddha Statues

All the work including carving and painting is done by hand by our Newar artisans here in Nepal. The casting of the statue is done with traditional lost wax method. The technique used to create a Buddha statue is commonly referred to as the Lost Wax method because the original wax model is melted away during the casting process, hence being “lost” in that sense.

Ancient techniques used to make Buddha statues (the lost wax method)

One of the most popular and ancient techniques used to make Buddha statues is the lost wax method. This method involves creating a wax model of the statue, covering it with clay, heating it to melt the wax, and then pouring molten metal into the hollow mold. The metal hardens and takes the shape of the statue, which is then polished and finished.

Hand-carving is done by our fine Newar artisans on top this method to produce fine details and intricate designs on the statue. This carving technique involves using a chisel and a hammer to carve out the statue from a block of copper or wood or stone whatever the material is used.

This technique requires a lot of patience and skill, as well as a good sense of proportion and symmetry. Carving produces solid and durable statues that conveys the meanings of the intended lessons represented by the Buddha rupas and their hand gestures.

The creation of a Buddha statue involves three primary casting steps, followed by two additional steps to finalize the sculpture. Check our article for more details here -> Making of Buddha Statue
